Venture-backed digital mental health platform Headway announced a new opt-in marketplace for clinicians, charging a $9.99 fee per session initiated through this option. This move sparked backlash from clinicians on and off the platform, who expressed concern about financial pressure on top of existing industry challenges.
Background:
The industry is wary of how these fees will impact providers already facing tight reimbursement rates. Headway clarifies that the fee doesn't apply to patients booked directly through a provider's unique link or those referred from other sources. Existing caseloads are also exempt.
New Marketplace Functionality:
Opting into the marketplace gives clinicians a unique tracking link with an UTM code. If patients come to Headway without a specific therapist in mind, the platform's search and matching function will apply the fee per session. Clinicians can choose to opt out without penalty, continuing their use of Headway as before.
Industry Impact:
This change may deter some clinicians, especially smaller practices, leading to potential attrition. Headway aims to support small practices but the fee structure could prove controversial.
